Kids ride best when safety is a habit, not a lecture. A few clear rules, practised together, keep rides fun and safe.
Helmet, every ride, every time
A helmet should sit level, cover the forehead, and feel snug without hurting. If a helmet has had a hard fall, replace it. No helmet, no ride, even for a short trip to the park.
Be seen and be predictable
Bright clothes help, and lights help even more at dusk. Teach children to ride in a straight line, signal with a hand before turning, and look behind before moving out. Ride on paths and quiet streets first, and only move to busier roads when they are ready.
Check the bike together
Before a ride, check tyres, brakes, chain, and that the wheels and handlebars are tight. Teach the child the same quick check, so they learn to spot a problem early.
Rules for roads and paths
Stop at junctions, give way to walkers on shared paths, and never ride with headphones that block traffic sounds. An adult should ride with younger children, and older children should tell an adult where they are going and when they will be back.
Q: At what age can a child ride alone?
A: It depends on the child, the route, and local rules. Start with quiet paths and an adult nearby, and increase independence only when the child shows steady control and road awareness.
