Beginners make the same few mistakes, and most are easy to fix. Avoiding them early makes riding more comfortable and much more enjoyable.
Wrong saddle height
A saddle that is too low strains the knees, while one that is too high makes you rock side to side. Set it so your leg is almost straight at the bottom of the pedal stroke, with a slight bend in the knee, and fine-tune from there.
Gears used too late
Many beginners ride in too hard a gear and grind uphill. Shift early, before the hill gets steep, and keep your pedalling smooth. Easier gears are not a sign of weakness, they are how gears are meant to be used.
No water, food, or plan
Take water on every ride longer than half an hour, and a snack on longer rides. Tell someone your route, carry a phone, a spare tube, and a pump, and check the weather before you leave.
Skipping brakes and tyre checks
A quick check before riding takes a minute: squeeze both brakes, spin both wheels, and check tyre pressure. Most beginner breakdowns are preventable with that one habit.
Trying to do too much, too soon
Build distance gradually, about a little more each week, not double in one weekend. Soreness is normal, sharp pain is not. Rest is part of training.
Q: What is the single best habit for a beginner?
A: Ride regularly, even for short rides, and check your bike before each ride. Regular short rides build fitness faster than rare long ones.
