A clean bike is easier to check, lasts longer, and rides better. You do not need special equipment, just a gentle method and a little time.
Wash from top to bottom
Start with the frame, then wheels, then the drivetrain. Use a bucket of warm water with bike-safe soap, a soft sponge, and brushes for tight spots. Rinse gently, without a pressure washer, so water does not get forced into bearings.
Clean the drivetrain separately
Use a brush and degreaser on the chain, cassette, and chainrings if they are dirty. Rinse, dry the chain well, and lube it lightly after cleaning. A clean drivetrain shifts better and wears much more slowly.
Dry and check
Dry the bike with a cloth, especially the chain and bolts. Check tyres for cuts, brakes for wear, and bolts for tightness while the bike is clean, because problems are easier to spot. Finish with a light polish on the frame if you like, but keep polish off the brakes and tyres.
How often to clean
Clean after muddy or wet rides, and give the bike a fuller clean every few weeks for regular riders. A quick wipe after a dusty ride is often enough between full cleans.
Q: Can I wash my bike with dish soap?
A: A mild soap is fine for occasional use, but bike soap is gentler on paint and seals. Avoid harsh cleaners, and never use a pressure washer.
