Changing a tube is a basic skill every rider should know. With a calm method, it takes only a few minutes, even on the road.
Remove the wheel and old tube
Shift to the smallest gear first, release the brake if needed, and remove the wheel. Use tyre levers gently to lift one side of the tyre off the rim, then pull out the old tube. Check inside the tyre and rim for the cause of the puncture, such as a thorn, glass, or spoke end.
Fit the new tube carefully
Put a little air in the new tube so it holds its shape, then fit the valve through the rim and tuck the tube inside the tyre. Work the tyre back onto the rim with your thumbs, starting opposite the valve and finishing at the valve. Avoid tyre levers for the last part if you can, because levers can pinch the tube.
Inflate in two stages
Inflate to a low pressure first, check that the tyre sits evenly on the rim all the way round, then inflate to the recommended pressure. Refit the wheel, check the brakes, and spin the wheel to check for rubbing.
Practise at home first
Practise once at home, in good light, before you need to do it on a ride. Carry a spare tube, tyre levers, and a pump, and check your spare tube fits your wheel size.
Q: Why did my new tube puncture straight away?
A: The usual cause is a pinch during fitting, or the original sharp object still in the tyre. Always check the tyre inside before fitting a new tube.
