Keeping a bike in top shape is not about constant work. It is about a few regular habits that catch small problems before they become big repairs.
A quick check before every ride
Squeeze both brakes, spin both wheels, check tyre pressure, and check that the wheels and handlebars are tight. This takes less than a minute and prevents most roadside problems.
A monthly check at home
Once a month, clean the bike, check the chain for wear, look at brake pads and tyres, and check bolts, cables, and gears. Lube the chain after cleaning, and wipe off the excess.
A yearly service
Once a year, or sooner for daily riders, have a full service. Bearings, cables, and drivetrain parts wear slowly, and a service catches them before they fail. Keep a note of service dates, so you know when parts were last checked.
Store it well
Store the bike under cover, away from rain and strong sun. Hang it or stand it where it will not fall, and keep tyres off a hot surface. A well-stored bike needs less work and lasts longer.
Q: How do I know when my bike needs a service?
A: Noises, poor shifting, soft brakes, play in wheels or cranks, and a worn chain are all signs. If in doubt, book a service, because early checks are cheaper than repairs.
