A clean, lightly lubed chain runs quietly, shifts well, and lasts much longer. The job is simple, but the method matters more than the brand of lube.
Clean first, then lube
Wipe the chain with a cloth, or clean it with a chain tool and degreaser if it is very dirty. Let it dry fully before lubing, because lube on a wet, dirty chain just traps grit. A clean chain is the starting point, not an optional extra.
Apply lightly, one drop at a time
Put one small drop of lube on each roller while you turn the pedals backwards slowly. Use a lube suited to your conditions: wet lube for rain and mud, dry lube for dry, dusty roads. Do not flood the chain.
Wipe off the excess
Wait a few minutes, then wipe the chain thoroughly with a clean cloth. The lube that matters is inside the rollers, not on the outside. Excess lube on the outside collects dust and makes the chain dirty again fast.
How often to lube
Lube when the chain looks dry, sounds noisy, or after riding in rain. For most riders, that means every few rides, or weekly for daily riders. Check the chain with a wear tool regularly, because a worn chain wears the cassette too.
Q: Can I use household oil on a chain?
A: It is better than nothing in an emergency, but bike chain lube is made to stay in place and resist dirt. Use proper chain lube for regular care.
